The shoreline is the other half of a waterfront. A dock can be perfect and the bank behind it can be sliding into the lake. The Lake of the Ozarks has steep, rocky shoreline and heavy wake traffic, and between the two, unprotected banks erode, undercut, and eventually slide. Ozark Dock & Lift builds and repairs seawalls, riprap, and shoreline stabilization that hold the bank and keep your yard out of the water.

Riprap on a Steep Rock Bank

For most of this shoreline, graded riprap is the right answer. Clean, angular rock sized to the wake is laid over a filter fabric that keeps the soil in and lets water pass. Riprap absorbs the energy of a wake instead of reflecting it, drains freely so no water pressure builds behind it, and flexes with the ground rather than cracking the way a rigid wall can. We build the toe into stable ground first, because the toe is what actually holds the slope above it.

Retaining Walls Where the Yard Meets the Water

On flatter lots where usable yard has to be held back from the lake, a rock or segmental block retaining wall does the work. The wall that lasts is the one with proper drainage behind it: water pressure, not wave action, is what pushes most walls over. We build in drainage stone and weep points so the wall is never holding back a column of trapped water, and we tie the footing into ground that will not move.

Why Banks Fail Here

Wake is the quiet driver. A busy cove takes wakes from dawn to dusk all summer, and every one pulls a little soil off a bare bank. Heavy rain running down a steep lot does the rest. The failure almost always starts at the toe, where the water undercuts the slope; once the toe goes, the ground above follows. Stopping the undercutting at the waterline is what holds everything above it, which is why a toe of rock matters more than a pretty cap.

Repairing a Failing Seawall

An old wall that is leaning, bulging, or has blown out a section can often be repaired rather than replaced. We find why it failed, which is usually water pressure behind a wall with no drainage, or a toe that got undercut. We add the drainage the wall never had, rebuild the failed section, and tie it into the sound wall. A wall rebuilt without fixing the cause just fails again, so we fix the cause.

Permitted Shoreline Work

Ameren manages this shoreline, and seawall and stabilization work generally needs a permit that keeps the work within the rules for the lakefront. We handle that side of it and build to what is approved, so the wall that goes in is one that can stay in. Shoreline work done without a permit can be ordered back out at the owner's cost.

What kind of seawall works best at the Lake of the Ozarks?
