On most lakes the question is pilings. On the Lake of the Ozarks it is anchoring. The water is deep and the bottom is dolomite and limestone bedrock, so docks float and are held in place by steel cables run to anchors fixed in the shoreline. When a dock drifts, lists toward the bank, or snatches hard at its lines in a blow, the anchoring has failed somewhere, and that is the work Ozark Dock & Lift does most.

We reset and rebuild dock anchoring across the lake: cable replacement, rock and auger anchors, eye bolts, shackles, thimbles and turnbuckles, and the occasional true piling in the rare shallow, soft-bottom cove. The goal is a dock that sits exactly where it belongs and stays there through wind, wake, and a rising lake.

Rock Anchors and Auger Anchors

How a dock is anchored depends on the bank. On a steep rock shore we set rock anchors: a hole drilled into the bedrock, an anchor grouted or wedged in, and a cable run from it to the dock. On a softer, flatter bank an auger anchor is screwed deep into the ground until it grips. Both fail the same way over time, by working loose as the lake level cycles and the wakes pull. We reset anchors that have moved, add anchors where the dock was under-held, and match the anchor type to the ground it goes into.

Cables, Eyes, and the Hardware That Rusts

The cable almost never fails first. The connections do. Eye bolts rust at the waterline, shackles corrode, thimbles cut into tired cable, and turnbuckles seize. A single corroded shackle can drop a whole cable run. We replace worn hardware with hot-dip galvanized or stainless, re-terminate cables properly with the right thimbles and clamps, and re-tension the system so every line carries its share.

When a Dock Has Been Drifting

A dock that has been moving has usually done hidden damage: a cable has sawed into a frame member, an anchor has dragged a gouge in the bank, or the gangway hinge has been wrenched. We do not just re-tie it. We find why it moved, fix the cause, check the frame and gangway for damage the drifting caused, and reset the anchoring so the problem does not walk straight back.

Gangways on a Steep Bank

Much of this shoreline is steep, and the connection between solid ground and a floating dock is an articulating gangway that rides the lake level. A gangway with a failed hinge, a bent frame, or a missing wheel at the dock end is both a safety problem and a source of stress on the dock. We repair and replace gangways and their hinges so the walk down to the water is solid no matter where the lake sits that week.

Why does my dock have cables instead of pilings?

Because the lake is deep and the bottom is rock. A piling has to be driven into a bottom it can grip, and most of this lake drops away into water far too deep to pile, over dolomite and limestone bedrock a pile cannot penetrate. So docks here float and are held by steel cables run to anchors fixed in the bank. Pilings show up only in the rare shallow, soft-bottom spot. Anchoring, not piling, is what holds your dock.

My dock keeps shifting in wind. What is wrong?

An anchor point has failed or the cables have gone slack. The usual culprits are a stretched cable, a corroded eye bolt or shackle, a rock anchor that has worked out of its hole, or an auger that dragged in soft ground. A dock with slack in its system walks with every wake and loads the remaining anchors harder, so one failure tends to cause the next. We find the failed point, reset it, and re-tension the whole system.

How long do dock cables and anchors last?

Good hot-dip galvanized or stainless hardware lasts many years; cheap plated hardware rusts out fast in a lake. The failure is almost never the cable itself but the connections: eyes, shackles, thimbles, and turnbuckles. We inspect every connection, replace anything corroded with galvanized or stainless, and protect the points that sit at the waterline where rust works fastest.

Can you add anchors to a dock that was under-anchored from the start?

Yes, and it is common. Plenty of docks were set with too few anchors for the wind and wake they actually see. We add rock or auger anchors, run additional cables, and balance the tension so the load is shared. A properly anchored dock rides the lake level quietly instead of snatching at its cables every time a wake rolls in.
